In my last installment of my blog series discussing the value of a non exec director and coaching, I wanted to let you know about an area of my business I am actively developing as a non-executive director. Over the last couple of years a number of my clients have asked me to move from business coach to take a non-exec director within their organisation. What this means is that I work more closely and frequently with them, both face to face and via phone/email, and get more deeply embedded with their business – which ultimately gives them greater value and me more ability to have a significant impact on their bottom line.
What is the difference between the role of coach and non exec director? As outlined in my last blog, coaching is a great way to help you set strategy and support you in one or two specific areas of your business whether that be sales, people, a challenge and so on and has had a positive but limited effect.
The non exec director role builds upon this as I am able to ‘dig in deeper’ and take a more rounded role, including looking at financials, plugging capability gaps and get more involved in developing and delivering your growth strategy (some of my clients already say I do this so I am just formalising it a little more!).
Of course there are pros and cons to both approaches and one approach doesn’t fit all, which is why I am offering both. For support in specific areas or projects, then coaching is the preferred route. To create or grow your senior team without the cost of hiring an expensive Director then the Non Exec route is the way to go.
I hope this might be something you are interested in so please let me have your thoughts and maybe we can get together to have a chat about it? It doesn’t have to be an expensive cost for your business but will turn into an invaluable asset and investment so let’s grab a coffee and have a chat.
